Why Factor Numbers?

When first learning math skills, factoring gives a better understanding of multiplication tables. Instead of practicing multiplication of two numbers, you are working in reverse. Starting with one number, use systematic problem-solving skills like trial division to find all possible factors of a number. This skill is important in areas of mathematics such as simplifying fractions, or in geometry regarding area of a shape, or in algebra when factoring polynomials.

In everyday life we need factoring skills for common problems. Consider these examples.

  • Pack 100 items evenly into boxes that will be easy to carry. Is it 2 boxes of 50 each? Is it 10 boxes of 10 each? Knowing how to factor 100 helps lay out the options.
  • Build a rectangular garden to arrange 36 plants evenly spaced with one foot around each plant. Do you want 1 row of 36 plants? Do you want 6 rows of 6 plants each? Knowing how to factor 36 can optimize the layout of your garden.
